Is Portugal Still Worth It for Digital Nomads in 2025? (An Honest Opinion)

Portugal was the poster child of remote work — but in 2025 the picture is more nuanced. An honest opinion on what's still amazing, what's broken, and where smart nomads are going beyond Lisbon.
There was a time — not long ago — when Portugal was the poster child for remote work. Fast internet, ocean air, pastel buildings, pastel de nata. Cheap, easy, aesthetically perfect.
Lisbon, in particular, became the nomad world's darling — and perhaps its victim.
In 2025 the question is no longer "why Portugal?" It's: **is Portugal still worth it for digital nomads?** Let's get honest.
## What's Still Amazing
- The Atlantic — wild, powerful, free.
- The pace of life — long lunches, real conversations, human-scale streets.
- Culture deeply embedded outside the urban bubble — fado, food, festivals, faith.
- High quality of life without burning out or maxing your credit card (compared to most of Western Europe).
- One of the safest countries in the world.
- The D8 visa + IFICI tax regime + path to EU citizenship in 5 years (still one of the best deals in Europe).
## What's Broken
- **Lisbon prices.** Rents up 60%+ in five years. €2,000/mo for a one-bed in Príncipe Real isn't unusual.
- **Bureaucracy.** AIMA delays, NIF appointments backlogged, banking friction.
- **Anti-nomad sentiment** in some Lisbon neighbourhoods — earned, in places.
- **Tourist saturation.** Alfama, Bairro Alto, Belém at peak season are unworkable.
- **End of original NHR.** The replacement (IFICI) is narrower.
## Where Smart Nomads Are Going Instead
- **Porto** — half the cost of Lisbon, arguably prettier, serious creative community.
- **Madeira** — the original nomad village, year-round spring weather.
- **Costa da Caparica** — surf + 15 minutes from Lisbon.
- **Pipa (Brazil)** + Portugal rotation — the nomadic move of 2025.
- **Albufeira** — quiet revival, growing community, off-season pricing.
- **Comporta, Ericeira, Lagos** — small towns where the original Portugal lifestyle still exists.
## The Verdict
If "Portugal" means "Lisbon" to you, it's probably not worth it anymore. If "Portugal" means "Porto, Madeira, Caparica, Albufeira, Pipa rotation, EU passport in 5 years" — it's still one of the best plays in the world.
The country didn't lose its magic. The smart move is just to look beyond the obvious neighbourhood.
